Although Schalke had some weaker performances they won both league matches against Augsburg and Braunschweig in the past weeks. But overall it was very hard work and it looks like that they have a lot of problems above all if they must play bigger clubs or better teams. This happend already under the week in CL match where they faced Chelsea London and in which they never had any chance. They lost this one very easy 0-3 and allowed some easy goals as well again. Above all after standard situations like corner, free kicks and so on they are very easy to crack. A lot of mistakes in their defensive play allowed their opponents many goals so far. Of course they tried to work on this but they were not able to solve it at the moment. Coach Keller’s young starting lineup needs still time and maybe a leader. Of course Boateng can be the man here but he has some problems with his knee and is not at 100 percent additional. He has more to do with himself as he can lead the young players Meyer, Draxler, Clemens and so on at this time. A lot of injured or unavailable players make the situation for Coach Keller not better. He has to find out the best and strongest lineup for this important derby match. In central midfield the problems are huge as with Höger got one player injured last weekend and is out for long time now, next one Jones face some knee problems and is not at 100% as he trained less while Goretzka replaced Höger in Braunschweig and Chelsea but is to young and unexperienced. Keller’s important mission to find a partner beside Neustädter and they should be as compact as they can because with Dortmund’s fast offensive line they get a lot of trouble else. Additional he changed always in central back what help not much to get a good and balanced defensive line. It speaks not much for the players. In offensive he has almost no alternatives as with striker Huntelaar and Farfan miss two important players already and the squad is not as big as they maybe need.
After Dortmund totally outplayed Gladbach but lost some weeks ago they turned things around and played weak against Hannover but won. Also their important trip to London for the CL match against Arsenal was not as good as they can but nevertheless they managed to get the win. This important one put them in a very good position in their group and gives a lot of self confidence for the upcoming matches. Therefore they can travel the few Kilometer to Gelsenkirchen with a lot of confidence in their bag. According to the last matches the situation for Coach Klopp is getting better and better as he has some of the injured players back in squad and allows him some more options. Despite the good situation he counts on the strongest lineup here anyway. A win should be very important to stay in touch with leader Bayern Munich and also give the fans some back after two derby loses in a row. Both with 1-2 but they look much better this time against a battered Schalke side. If they can run their normal play and do not waste so many it is not obvious that they can get something out of this match.
If we compare both sides I see the advantage clear on Dortmund’s side although Schalke is a great home team which won over 60% of their home matches in recent seasons. Of course it is a derby an all can happen here but I doubt that Dortmund gives this match away again. I can not see that Schalke’s defensive line can hold the pressure for long time and I am sure that Dortmund score here twice or more as it was almost incredible what they created in Gladbach but did not score. This time I see them in a much more comfortable situation against a weak defensive line. On the other side S04 want invest a lot and sooner or later this match can be very open what can bring some spectacle here.
